Sam Sniderman, born in Toronto in 1920, began his journey in the music industry in 1937, selling records at his brother Sidney's College Street shop, Sniderman Radio Sales and Service.

In 1961, he opened the iconic SAM THE RECORD MAN flagship store on Yonge Street, a landmark that would define Toronto's cultural landscape until its closure in 2007.

Known for his commitment to carrying every conceivable recording and hiring musicians and music enthusiasts, Sniderman cultivated a loyal customer base and helped shape the city's music scene.

The store's success sparked a nationwide franchise expansion, with 140 locations across Canada by the early 1980s.

Though the music industry's evolution led to the chain's decline, with just one store remaining in Belleville, Ontario, the legacy of Sam the Record Man endures.

Its iconic neon records on Yonge Street, preserved as heritage elements, remain a symbol of Toronto’s musical history.

Black Maple Trading Co. is deeply honoured to have an official license to celebrate this legacy through its merchandise, keeping the spirit of Sam the Record Man alive for new generations.
